After waiting long and hard for college football, it is officially back and week 1 was just a preview of what crazy things are going to happen throughout the season but here is some highlights and takeaways from some of the top games this weekend.
Thursday, August 30
#21 UCF 56, UCONN 17
The rivalry that isn’t even a rivalry, the civil conflict game. One name to take away from this game is Mckenzie Milton. Milton had an amazing game with 346 passing yards and 5 touchdowns. UCF shows everyone why they believe they are the National Champions of last year and runs over UCONN.
Northwestern 31, Purdue 17
Northwestern pulls out a win in West Lafayette in an early season B1G TEN matchup. A true freshman named Rondale Moore put on a heisman like performance. Yes I know he will not win the heisman but it is still fun to overreact to big early season performances. Moore had 79 rushing yards, 1 rushing touchdown, 109 receiving yards, 1 receiving touchdown.
Texas A&M 59, Northwestern St. 7
Jimbo Fishers first game as head coach of the Aggies was a big win and although this game may not mean much to either team since the outcome was as expected. Also this game may have a HUGE impact on next weeks game. Clemson travels to College Station to take on the 12th man in Texas A&M and after winning by 50+ point the Aggies are coming off a hot performance so an upset in College Station next week would not be a surprise to me. Also to add to the Aggies dominant performance against Northwestern St. running back Trayveon Williams from Texas A&M had 20 carries, 240 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Friday, August 31
#4 Wisconsin 34 , Western Kentucky 3
The Badgers put a beating on the former boca raton bowl champions holding them to only 3 points. A HUGE performance out of running back Jonathan Taylor making a early heisman resume with 2 touchdowns and 145 rushing yards.
#13 Stanford 31 , San Diego St. 10
Bryce Love of Stanford was the early heisman favorite coming into this year but things may have changed after this performance. Love put on an extremely underwhelming performance with 18 carries and only 28 rushing yards. Hopefully Love can bounce back in his next few games.
#11 Michigan St. 38, Utah St. 31
This was the best game of friday night and it really should not have been. Quarterback Jordan Love from Utah State almost pulled off what would have been the biggest upset of the night. Michigan State did not think Utah St. had any chance of competing against them but they were very wrong. If it wasn’t for a late lucky play by Michigan State Utah would have won that game.
Saturday, September 1 (the day we’ve all been waiting for)
#5 Ohio State 77 ,Oregon St. 31
Even without Urban Meyer Ohio State still won this game with no problem. The Buckeyes look like they will still be a serious contender in the B1G TEN and for the national championship even without Meyer for the first 3 games. After a long weather delay and a few big plays from Oregon St. the Buckeyes still come out on top putting up a huge game scoring 77 points. Ohio State still did let up 31 point so they may want to work on their defense this week.
#7 Oklahoma 63 , FAU 14
This game was not as close as I expected with Oklahoma putting a beating on FAU. Kyler Murray looks to be very similar to the man he is replacing in Baker Mayfield. Murray had 209 yards and 2 touchdowns in a dominating performance by Oklahoma as a whole against the FAU Owls.
#9 Auburn 21, #6 Washington 16
This was a great game between 2 top 10 teams and possibly the game of the year when you take playoff implications into hand and although i don’t fully believe Washington is as good as everyone says they are, I still think they are an above average team even. This was an overall great game and both defenses showed how strong they are even though neither team could hit field goals it was still an amazing way to kickoff the season.
#10 Penn State 45 , Appalachian State 38
This game was MUCH closer than everyone expected with the game going into overtime at 38-38 but Penn state still manages to come out with a win but one thing to take away from this is big programs should no longer schedule Appalachian State for out of conference games.
#17 West Virginia 40 , Tennessee 14
As expected West Virginia comes out with a win and Will Grier put up some big offensive numbers. The Mountaineers put a beating on Tennessee in Morgantown and i would expect more high scoring games from the Mountaineers in weeks to come.
#12 Notre Dame 24, #14 Michigan 17
The college gameday game of the week and a disappointing start for Michigan. The Wolverines played a terrible game and still only lost by 7 points. This win means a lot for Notre Dame and with Michigan losing they are going to have to run the table if they want to make the playoffs.
#1 Alabama 51, Louisville 14
Just as we thought Alabama puts a beating on Louisville with Tua leading the Tide. Both quarterbacks from Alabama did play but it is clear that Tua is the starter and far superior to Jalen Hurts.
Sunday, September 2
#25 LSU 33,#8 Miami 17
The only game on sunday and it did not disappoint. The LSU Tigers put on a show in Texas and the U looks to NOT be back. Going into the 4th quarter the Tigers held Miami to only 3 points, this LSU teams looks legit so watch out for them to make a run this year.
Monday, September 3
#20 Virginia Tech 24, #19 Florida State 3
After a disappointing season last year the Florida State Seminoles looked to make a statement against the Hokies and to simply put it, the Seminoles did not impress. The Hokies only let up 3 points the whole game while Florida State’s offense couldn’t get anything going for them. Virginia Tech’s defense looks to be legit only allowing 94 rush yards, 3 interceptions, 5 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries and 10+ tackles for a loss.
