The proposed trade for Kyrie Irving via @wojespn
UPDATE: it’s Official
You would have to think that this trade is going through and Kyrie Irving gets his wish. It looks as if the 2 best teams in the Eastern Conference are swapping star players with other players in return.
Now, what a weird situation this is. Kyrie is going to Boston and going to have to beat, his former team now, the Cleveland Cavaliers in order to reach the NBA Finals.
This is what Kyrie wanted. To carry his own team into the playoffs and win a title as if he was the superstar. But is this really what Kyrie wants? Yeah, the Celtics will be good with Kyrie, Al Hofford and Gordon Hayward but they’re losing a valuable piece in Jae Crowder. A player who just gets after it, a good stretch player and a great defender. The Celtics are also going to have to give up picks in order to acquire Kyrie so if Kyrie leaves in 2 years, it puts a small damage in their future. The pick the Cavs are receiving is the 2018 Brooklyn Nets first round pick. That’s a HUGE get for the Cavs as they’re going to have a top 5 pick in a LOADED NBA draft next year.
Now, in reality, I think the Cavs win this trade. They get Isaiah Thomas who finished in the top 5 of the MVP scoring, who can score just as good as Kyrie, just as clutch as Kyrie and just as bad as a defender than Kyrie. So in reality, the two players are not much different. But the difference is Jae Crowder. Crowder is exactly what the Cavs need, a strong presence on the wing that can defend very well. The Cavs already have all the pieces in the world, they just needed that wing stopper alongside LeBron, and now, in my opinion, they have it.
Thomas is going to have a HUGE chip on his shoulder and he is going to fit alongside LeBron great. I think LeBron will be very happy with this move and the Cavs are still the favorites in the Eastern Conference after winning this trade.
UPDATE: The deal between the Celtics and Cavaliers is done. The NBA offseason has been unreal.
PG: Isaiah Thomas, SF: Jae Crowder, C: Ante Zizic, 2018 unprotected Brooklyn first round pick.
