Thad Matta to Retire at the end of Next Season

“Ohio State has called a 2 p.m. press conference for athletic director Gene Smith and men’s basketball coach Thad Matta to meet with the media.

Sources have indicated that Smith and Matta will announce that the upcoming 2017-18 season will be Matta’s last as the OSU head coach.

Matta has dealt with health issues in recent years after undergoing back surgery. His last two teams failed to reach the NCAA Tournament and this past year’s team was his first to not reach the 20-win plateau at 17-15.” (Via

Well, the answer has finally been reached and this is some breaking news. I personally didn’t see this coming. Thad Matta has been a fantastic coach for the Buckeyes, helping a football school, turn into a basketball school.

Matta is stepping down as head coach after next season due to personal health reasons and if this is the end of the road for him, it was a great career.

In his 13 years at Ohio State, Thad Matta had a record of 337-123, 4x Big Ten Tournament champions, 5x Big Ten Regular Season Champion, 3x Big Ten Coach of the Year and took the Buckeyes to two final fours (2007, 2012).

Yes, the Buckeyes have hit a rough patch in the last couple years of Matta’s tenure, posting a 38-29 record in the last 2 seasons but that is not something that should be criticized. And to think people wanted Matta fired? Are you serious? He is one of the best coaches in the game. He took Ohio State, which is again a football school, to 9 NCAA Tournaments out of 13 years. The first season he was there the Buckeyes were ineligible for postseason play and the last 2 years they didn’t make the postseason either, but you have to think that’s when the health concerns started to kick in for Matta. The other year the Buckeyes didn’t make it was 2008 and that was a rebuilding year after coming off a National Championship loss but they won the NIT that year as a consolation. That’s it. Every year they made the tournament and did very well in March.

Thad Matta is a winning coach. He changed the culture in Columbus. He was the reason for the Buckeyes success. For anyone whoever wanted him fired, is completely wrong. It’s going to be difficult for Ohio State to replace Matta when he steps down, because he was one of the best coaches to do it.

Best of luck Coach Matta in your retirement and get well soon.
