NHL Playoffs Game 6 Recap

Half of the first round has already been decided with 4 or 5 games, so 4 teams have chances to win and move on. After the Minnesota vs. St. Louis game 5 that went to overtime, this 1st round has produced 16 OT games. That is 1 shy of the record set in 2013, so lets get to it…

Eastern Conference

Montreal Canadians vs. New York Rangers

Game 5 was a physical tough fought OT battle won by the Rangers in Montreal. With a chance to clinch at home, where they have struggled in recent years, the Rangers looked to get going right away. In series closing games at MSG, Lundqvist has a career record of 6-1. However it would be the Canadians who would control the 1st period out shooting the Rangers 11-6 and scoring first. An aggressive fore check by the Canadians would lead to an excellent Radulov diving pass and an Emelin snipe would put Montreal up early…

Slow start for the Rangers but a different team showed up in the 2nd period. Early in the 2nd, and on the power play, a great passing play and soccer-like trap and shoot by Zuccarello ties it up….

This got the crowd into the game. Jordie Benn got caught holding the stick on a bad penalty, he will fuck up again about 10 minutes later. Both team would trade chances as the pace began to pick up. As the home team, the Rangers get last change. When they saw the Canadians 4th line out for a face off in the defensive zone, they through out their top line. The Rangers would cause havoc in the offensive zone and posses the puck until Zucc gets his second of the period… Jordie Benn again in the spot light…

With their season on the line the Canadians would come out firing in the 3rd. They got a power play and could not capitalize. Their best chance came with about a minute left when Plekanec got a rebound in front and Lundqvist was there to make the pad save….

What a clutch save. After a strange season where he was benched, King Lundqvist showed he is still atop the throne… 7-1 now at home in series clinchers…

Series: 4-2 Rangers win. The Rangers won 3 in a row to end it after falling behind 2-1. Their top players out played the Montreal top players. Pacioretty only had 1 assist. In the 4 Montreal losses, they scored 1,2,1, and 1 goals. Price was amazing no doubt. But so was Lundqvist. This series was all about who could get win a battle late get the ugly goal. Usually Montreal blames losses on P.K. Subban but now he is gone and there is no one to blame (maybe the captain Pacioretty for his terrible play) but themselves.

Ottawa Senators vs. Boston Bruins

After an absolute thriller in Game 5 won the Bruins, the series headed back to Boston for game 6 with the home team’s series on the line. Boston would struggle early in the 1st, committing 3 delay of game penalties in the first 15 minutes. They were out shot 12-6. The delay of game penalties were preventing them from gaining control. Maybe it was the nerves of the young Boston players. But, the Sens could not capitalize going 0-3 on those power plays. In the last few minutes, the Bruins got their turn on the power play. A good sequence of passes lead to a Stafford snipe to take the lead…

Right after the goal with 15 seconds left in the 1st, another defensive collapse led Stone to a break away. Rask stones him to preserve the lead going into the 2nd. A Brassard blast from the point early in the 2nd would tie the game up. His shot would catch just enough of Bobby Ryan’s stick to deflect it in…

Bobby Ryan has been the best player on the Sens other than Karlsson. You get these breaks when your playing this well. About 5 minutes later, the Sens show their quick strike ability and score again. Turris gets some space and wrists a laser past Rask to take the lead. Down and the season on the line, the Bruins would fight back again. A great dispay of skill by Bergeron ties the game up off a Marchand rebound…

Boston out shot the Sens 12-3 in the 3rd period. They would get a power play midway through the 3rd but could not capitalize. The game would go into overtime. This would be the 4th OT game and ties the record for most OT games in a round, 17. The Sens would control the OT period not allowing the Bruins to get a shot on goal before they ended their season 6:30 into the extra period. Pastrnak would take a very bad penalty tackling an attacking Senator. Brutal. A good passing play would set up MacArthur for a one-timed blast for the win.

Series: 4-2 Senators win. The Senators quick strike ability with their forwards was to much for a banged up Boston defense missing 3 regulars. Bobby Ryan totaled 7 points and 4 big time goals. He would score┬átheir first goal of the series, both game winners in Boston (games 3 & 4) and the second goal of the series clincher. But the main reason why they won was their superstar Erik Karlsson. Enough can’t be said about him. He tells a reporter today, that he is playing with 2 micro-fractures in his heel. He played 41 minutes in game 5 and 30 in game 6! What a fuckin beast and total warrior (explains why he is dating Melinda Curry). He was the one on the ice playing those tough minutes against the Bruin’s top line late in every game. Anderson was great as well. Bruins have plenty of young talent they will be back.

Washington Capitals vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

With a huge game 5 win at home by the Caps, they look to close out the Leafs on the road who have been given them so much trouble. No game has been easy with 4 of the first 5 needing OT. The 1st period went back and forth with teams trading chances but the goalies stopped all 24 shots (14-10 Toronto). The 2nd period would be the same. Back and forth action with teams trading shots off the post. Toronto would get 14 shots again, and 11 for Washington, but the goalies would remain perfect going into the 3rd. Midway through the 3rd, Auston Matthews would get his 4th of the series. What a play…

Anderson was amazing, stopping so many great Washington chances until an unfortunate bounce. Johansson snuck one in off an tough angled shot…

The game would need overtime, making it the 18th OT game of the round and breaking the record. The Caps would control the puck most of the OT period and out shoot the leafs 6-1 until Johansson would get his second of the games to end the Leafs season…

Series: 4-2 Caps win. The Leafs proved their worth playing so well against the Caps during this series. They have so much young talent. Its good to see Matthews play well and score 4 goals in his first playoff. They will defiantly be a threat for a long time out of the East. However, right now the Caps are the better team.

Western Conference

Edmonton Oilers vs. San Jose Sharks

With a win at home in game 5, the Oilers had a chance to knock the Sharks out at home again. They lost the Cup at home last year. The goalies were perfect in the 1st stopping everything. It wasn’t until the first attack of the 2nd period when Edmonton broke the scoring open. Draisaitl got a step on a SJ defender and beat Jones…

Less than a minute later, the Sharks defense gets burned again. Slepyshev got behind the defense and walked in and ripped one by Jones. 2-0 Oilers going into the 3rd. With their season on the line, the Sharks would strike to get within one. Veteran Marleau punched one in…

Edmonton was able to survive San Jose’s late game survival push to keep their season alive. McDavid would get an empty netter to be the dagger.

Series: 4-2 Oilers win. The Oilers had enough offensive power to get past the veteran Sharks squad. Zach Kassian was an early game changer in the series leading the physical play and getting two game winners. McDavid finished +2 and with 4 points.

Onto the second round… preview coming soon.
