Max Scherzer, the reigning Cy Young winner, is unlikely to pitch opening day against Miami on April 3rd. Scherzer has been sidelined by a stress fracture in his right ring finger.
According to ESPN, the stress fracture caused Scherzer to change the grip on his fastball, placing three fingers on top of the ball instead of two.
Scherzer is in the beginning stages of learning how to cope with the new grip.
The injury has already forced Scherzer to miss the World Baseball Classic as he was set to be the number one pitcher for Jim Leyand’s USA team.

When asked about opening-day availability, Manager Dusty Baker responded with “At this point, probably no.”
Beginning the season on the disabled list is unlikely this point but it is not out of the question either. Scherzer’s health is vital to the success of the Nationals season.
